Head Dress, 2014
Nurtured by the grandfather who provided his first art supplies and the grandmother who nourished his mind with stories, Alfredo Arreguín is a painter whose art approaches poetry. Born in Michoacán, Mexico, Arreguín made his way to Seattle in his twenties and has lived there since, creating a body of work built on influences as wide ranging as Mexican folk art and the misty shores of the Pacific Northwest. Arreguín deftly pulls together his amalgam, whether in lush, mysterious junglescapes or his recurrent portraits of the inimitable Frida Kahlo. The works, in hot colors trestled by pattern, are visual feasts.
With subjects ranging from fine art, nature, and architecture to humor, the metaphysical, and more, Pomegranate’s interlocking jigsaw puzzles combine stunning images, superb color reproduction, and sturdy construction to delight generations of novice and veteran puzzle solvers alike.
